Alessandro RIMESSI, Ph.D.

Alessandro Rimessi has obtained a degree in Pharmacy in 2002 from the University of Ferrara and in 2006, a Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine at the University of Siena. The outstanding quality of his work led him to obtain the “International Human Frontier Science Program, long-term fellowships award” and in 2008 he has joined the laboratory of Prof. Pier Paolo Scaglioni, leader in the field of cancer biology, leukemogenesis and lung cancer, at Division of Oncology of the Simmons Cancer Center of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, USA.

In November 2008, Dr. Rimessi became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Morphology, Surgery and Experimental Medicine, Division of Pathology, Oncology and Experimental Biology of the University of Ferrara until December 2019, where he became Associate Professor in General Pathology at the Department of Medical Sciences, University of Ferrara.

Rimessi A., throughout his career, has maturated an excellent experience in the scientific field of Ca2+ signaling, mitochondrial stress responses and inflammation. He has a strong and long-term background as well as expertise and facilities in molecular and cell biology, digital imaging and biochemistry to studying the intracellular signal transduction in different pathological context, such as cancer and cystic fibrosis. In the field of cystic fibrosis, Prof. Rimessi A. has contributed to innovative observations, including the following: i) characterization of abnormal Ca2+ signals associated to defective CFTR channel (Rimessi et al. Nat Commun. 2015); ii) definition of role of Ca2+-effectors, such as phospholipase C-β3 and transient receptor potential ankyrin, in modulating inflammation in Cystic Fibrosis (Bezzeri et al. J Immunol. 2011; Prandini et al. Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol. 2016; Rimessi et al. Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol. 2018); iii) definition of role of Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter and NLRP3 inflammasome in modulating the inflammatory response in Cystic Fibrosis (Rimessi et al. Nat Commun. 2015); iv) the importance of ER-mitochondria tethering to regulate the selective autophagic responses during P. aeruginosa infection in Cystic Fibrosis (Rimessi et al., Sci Adv. 2020); v) the pharmacological regulation of Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter and its importance in CF lung hyperinflammation (Rimessi et al., Sci Adv. 2020).

Prof. Rimessi has broadened scientific perspectives by interacting with national and international academic scientists. In these years his studies have been supported by different research grants, including Italian Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation, where Prof. Rimessi was Principal Investigator. He is member of the Italian Society of Cell Biology and Differentiation (ABCD), and member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Oncology, Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology and of Biomedicines.

In January 2021, prof. Rimessi A. is author of 63 papers in international “peer-review” journals, of 2 book chapter and more than 30 meeting abstracts, with h-index 32 (Scopus), total impact factor 345 (Scopus) and total citations 3986 (Scopus).
